BACKGROUND

Inappropriate treatments of suspected urinary tract infections (UTI) in Long Term Care Facilities (LTCF) have been an ongoing problem for decades. A variety of approaches to improve accurate diagnosis and treatment have been implemented but adherence and sustainability have dampened the ability to resolve this clinical problem. The Cooper Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) Program (CUTIP) is a multifaceted evidence-based infection control program for UTIs in LTCFs that uses an algorithmic process, staff education, and change champions to improve patient outcomes.

The tool and program were created with guidance by the Iowa Model of Evidence-based Practice and feedback and buy-in from frontline nursing and a team of medical professionals. Through use of best practices, CUTIP improves assessment and diagnosis of UTI in LTC residents. This meets the healthcare requisites to decrease the use of inappropriate tests and antibiotics. The goals of the program are to improve healthcare outcomes for patients in LTCF by reducing inappropriate antibiotic treatments. In turn, decreased facility expenditures, reduced treatment sequelae, and improved facility compliance with state and federal regulations will follow.
